Which kind of day fits your group?
Start with one question: does someone in your group want the responsibility of operating the boat? A captained trip lets you spend the outing together while a captain handles navigation. Self-drive puts your designated driver at the helm, within the rental company’s operating area and rules.
Our suggestion: choose a captain when nobody wants to drive or your group wants a hosted outing. Consider self-drive when an eligible driver is comfortable handling the boat and wants that responsibility. A larger passenger allowance alone is not a reason to choose self-drive.

Two local options to start your comparison
These are different products, not a cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking. Published starting rates are not live quotes or verified discounts.
Captained: Destin Pontoon Charters
The operator lists private six-guest standard and slide pontoons. Published inclusions include a captain, floats, a cooler, ice and bottled water. Ask for the price and duration of the exact boat on your date; we have not confirmed a comparable four-hour quote. The website lists 314 Harbor Boulevard in Destin as its contact address—confirm your actual check-in and boarding location before travelling. Read the operator’s boat information.
Self-drive: Island Watersports Company
Its 12-passenger pontoon is advertised from $275 for four hours or $375 for eight hours, with fuel, shade, safety equipment and on-site parking included. Departure is from Okaloosa Island; its listed address is 1318 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, Fort Walton Beach. The rental page states 18+ to rent and offers captain referrals at extra cost. Confirm the driver requirements and all charges for your booking. Check published rates and terms.
Ask for the same trip in both quotes
Send each operator your date, group size including children, preferred duration and boat requirements. Ask whether the quoted time includes travel to and from Crab Island. Then request an itemized total: rental or charter, captain if applicable, fuel, taxes, booking fees and extras. Keep a refundable security deposit separate from the trip cost, while budgeting for any card hold.
An eight-hour starting price cannot fairly be compared with a four-hour private charter. Likewise, a per-person shared cruise is a different purchase from a boat reserved for your group. Compare only after you know the duration, privacy and inclusions.
Plan the departure, not just the destination
Destin Harbor and nearby Okaloosa Island are separate starting points. Use the boarding address supplied with your reservation for directions. Ask about parking, check-in time, restroom access and what you should bring. Avoid scheduling another activity tightly against the boat’s return time.
Settle driver and weather questions before booking
For self-drive, ask which identification and boating education documents your driver needs. Check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s current education requirements, including applicable exemptions, and confirm the operator’s own age and experience policies. A rental company’s minimum renter age does not answer every driver eligibility question.
For either option, request the cancellation and weather policy in writing. Ask who decides whether a trip runs, what happens if it ends early, and whether the remedy is a refund or rescheduling. Ask the operator about conditions, safe boarding and water access, and appropriately sized life jackets for your group. A booking does not guarantee suitable conditions on the day.
